At the half way stage, India knew that their famed batting lineup had to produce something special if they had to defend their Champions trophy. But an inspired spell from Mohammed Aamir all but extinguished India’s hopes within the first 12 overs, as he ripped through the heart of India’s top order. When all hope seemed lost, Hardik Pandya played a special little innings which was cruelly put to an end through a run out. Although the all rounder was visibly furious as he walked back to the pavilion, Virat Kohli defends Hardik Pandya’s actions in the Champions trophy final.

“Everyone who plays for the country is committed to the team. He is passionate and he felt he was in the zone where he thought he could have done something special for the team today,” said Kohli.

Pandya smashed 76 from 43 balls, as he threatened to trigger an Indian fightback. Just when it looked like he might go up another gear, he was involved in an unnecessary mix up with Ravindra Jadeja which ultimately cost his wicket. Pandya threw a fit as he was visibly distraught while he walked back to the dressing room.
Jadeja became public enemy number one, as fans on social media lambasted him for not sacrificing his wicket. Even VVS Laxman said that Jadeja should have sacrificed himself for the sake of the team.
All things considered, India were well and truly beaten by an excellent Pakistan side. But every cloud has a silver lining, which is why this innings might just kick start that Pandya’s international career needs right now.
