Dhoni takes the right DRS decision

Dhoni takes the right DRS decision: The Indian wicket-keeper was wise enough to prevent India from making a mistake in the first innings.

During the first ODI of the ongoing India’s tour of Australia at Sydney, former India captain and current wicket-keeper batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni once again proved as to why he is arguably the best when it comes to taking a DRS (Decision Review System) call.

It all happened on the third delivery of the 11th over when Australia batsman Usman Khawaja missed a Mohmmad Shami delivery. With the ball hitting the batsman’s pads, the Indian appealed in unison only to be denied by the umpire.

The fact that Khawaja had moved across is what had made the appeal all the more convincing. Perhaps, citing the same in mind, Shami asked India captain Virat Kohli to opt for the review.

As is the procedure at this point in time, Dhoni was asked for his suggestion. “Wo bowler ka call hai (It is the bowler’s call)”, the 37-year old cricketer was heard as saying on the stump mic. The doubt initiated by Dhoni aided Kohli to not opt for the review.

Subsequent replays confirmed that the ball had pitched pitched marginally outside the leg stump. Had India opted for the review, they would have lost it on the spot.

After Australia captain Aaron Finch won the toss and chose to bat, Australia ended up scoring 288-5 in their allotted quota of 50 overs. Peter Handscomb, who came in to bat at No. 5, top-scored for his team scoring 73 (61) with the help of six fours and two sixes. After being dropped from the Test team and playing an ODI after 15 months, Handscomb would be relieved to contribute for his team.

With bowling figures of 10-0-54-2, Kuldeep Yadav was the pick of the bowlers for the visitors.

The optimist in him is waiting for the day when Punjab Kings will win their maiden Indian Premier League title. When not watching cricket, he is mostly found in a cinema hall watching a Punjabi movie.
