Lloyd Pope's record-breaking spell vs Queensland

Lloyd Pope’s record-breaking spell vs Queensland: South Australia’s leg-spinner registered his maiden five-wicket haul.

During the first day of the fifth match of the ongoing season of Sheffield Shield between South Australia and Queensland at Adelaide, 18-year old Llyod Pope has become the younges ever bowler to register a seven-wicket haul in Sheffield Shield, Australia’s premier First-class tournament.

Having made his First-class debut in the first round of the Sheffield Season last week, Pope registered his maiden five-wicket haul in only his second match. Figures of 22.2-0-87-7 calls for a memorable maiden five-wicket haul.

Currently 18 years and 328 days old, Pope surpassed Doug Walters’ record of being the youngest bowler to register a seven-wicket haul in the Sheffield Shield. Walters had done the same in 1965. Talking exclusively of leg-spinners, the previous youngest to achieve the feat was James Campbell in 1926.

Pope was introduced into the attack as the fourth change bowler in the 24th over. On the first delivery that he bowled, he accounted for Sam Heazlett’s (18) wicket as the left-hand batsman was caught down the leg side by wicket-keeper Harry Nielsen.

In his second spell, Pope wrong’un saw the better of Joe Burns (64) as he was found wanting in front of the stumps in the 44th over. Pope followed it up by pinning down Jack Wildermuth (38) in the 48th over.

In the 60th over, Pope provided his team with a double blow as he dismissed Micheal Nesser (13) and Mitchell Swepson (0) in the same over. In his following over, Pope beat Jimmy Peirson (42) as he mis-timed a shot to Jack Lehmann at mid-off.

After a 39-run stand for the 10th wicket between Brendan Doggett (18) and Luke Feldman (22*), Pope dismissed the former to dismiss the opposition’s last batsman.

Peirson, captain of Queensland, had won the toss and chose to bat earlier. The visitors lost wickets at regular intervals throughout their innings as they eventually got bundled out for 231 in 73.2 overs.

At stumps, South Australia had scored 39-0 in 20 overs, reducing the deficit to 192 runs.
