Cody Rhodes Dusty Rhodes

Cody Rhodes is arguably the biggest babyface in WWE at the moment. Despite his loss to Roman Reigns in the main event of WrestleMania 39, he is still one of the biggest draws in the company, and that has been proven by the record attendance in recent WWE live events. This is a far cry from his previous run with the promotion. Not many may have seen this coming during his time as Stardust, but his father Dusty Rhodes was always sure about his son’s destiny.

Since his return to the WWE, the American Nightmare has been strapped with a rocket to his back and pushed to heights very few stars are subjected to. He won every match against Seth Rollins before returning from an injury to win the Royal Rumble.

He is currently booked to face Brock Lesnar at Backlash. Very few people get to feud with Lesnar. The fact that Rhodes is in this position would certainly put a smile on his late father’s face.

Shawn Spears reveals what Dusty Rhodes actually thought of son Cody Rhodes

During a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet, Former WWE star, Shawn Spears, revealed what Dusty Rhodes told him about Cody Rhodes. He recalled his time in OVW that served as WWE’s developmental back in 2006.

He was paired up with Cody and the two won the OVW Southern Tag Team Champions together on two separate occasions. Speaking about the time when Dusty paired him with Cody, Spears said:

“I remember, we were in OVW and we were a tag team. And Dusty, his dad, came down, and he was all ‘Hey baby, we’re going to put you guys together. Young, good-looking guys. You got a little bit of experience.’

It was a really smart idea, but Dusty said ‘Nice babyface tag-team, we’ll give you a bit of a run. But I need you to know, Cody is destined to be a star.’ He told me that way back when. I don’t think Cody was in a year. But he [Dusty] knew it.”

Cody Rhodes made his main roster debut a year later in 2007. He eventually joined Randy Orton and Ted DiBiase as part of Legacy. However, his run did not go as well as he hoped for and he eventually parted ways with the promotion in 2016.

After making a name for himself in Ring of Honor, New Japan Pro Wrestling and All Elite Wrestling, he returned to the WWE as the star his father always hoped he would become.

Dusty Rhodes’ mood depended on how Cody Rhodes was booked

Dave Meltzer once revealed, on the Wrestling Observer Radio, that Dusty Rhodes paid close attention to his son’s WWE career. In fact, his mood depended on how well Cody was booked on Monday Night RAW that week.

“If Cody lost a match on RAW on Monday, Dusty would be in a bad mood the entire week. If Cody won, then Dusty would be in a good mood the entire week. His mood was determined by how Cody was being booked that week. Dusty was so, so into Cody,” Meltzer said.

Meltzer also revealed that Cody told him if Dusty was alive, he would be very upset with him leaving the WWE. However, moving away from the promotion was exactly what the son of the son of the plumber needed at the time.

He could have stayed for the easy money. However, by placing a bet on himself, he shaped himself into the main event level star that he is today.

Like most combat sports enthusiasts, his passion for watching people fight began with WWE when he witnessed a young Brock Lesnar massacre Hulk Hogan back in 2002. This very passion soon branched out to boxing and mixed martial arts. Over the years he fell in love with the theatrics that preceded the bell and the poetic carnage that followed after. Each bruise a story to tell, each wound a song of struggle, his greatest desire is to be there to witness it all. His favorite wrestler is Shawn Michaels and he believes that GSP is the greatest to ever step foot inside the octagon. Apart from wrestling, he is also fond of poetry and music.
