WWE Title plans for Clash of Champions revealed. The promotion’s top title will not be defended at Payback this Sunday.
Many had predicted Randy Orton to come out on top during his match against Drew McIntyre at SummerSlam. The Scottish Psychopath however, successfully defended his WWE title. Rumors swirled that a rematch was in order at Payback but the WWE pulled another swerve by booking NXT call up Keith Lee against the Viper at the Pay per View instead.

However, it is clear that McIntyre and Orton are far from done with each other. The latest episode of WWE RAW saw Orton punt the WWE Champion three times; thereby putting him out of action. Surely McIntyre will want to extract revenge.
WWE Title plans for Clash of Champions revealed
According to WrestlingNews.Co the WWE had originally planned for Orton to dethrone McIntyre at SummerSlam. He would then hold on to the title until Royal Rumble or more likely in an I Quit match at the main event of Wrestlemania.
However, Dave Meltzer has since noted that the main event has not been locked. The company can change their direction if need be. With that said however, the report from WrestlingNews.Co claims that McIntyre will return soon after Payback and will set up his rematch with Orton for Clash of Champions next month.
This is interesting because it seems to suggest that Orton will trump over Keith Lee on Sunday. However, the former NXT and NA Champion has just debuted and is coming off a loss in his last match at NXT. A loss in his first major appearance on the main roster could hurt his stock especially among viewers who don’t watch NXT.
Regardless, the feud so far has been booked well. It will be interesting to see how the WWE conclude it and where do all three wrestlers involved go from here.
