Ed Woodward explains why Man Utd ignored Jose Mourinho’s transfer targets
Ed Woodward explains why Man Utd ignored Jose Mourinho’s transfer targets during his time as their manager at the Old Trafford.
Jose Mourinho’s time at Old Trafford was tumultuous to say the least. He helped them win the Europa league and come second in the Premier League (his greatest achievement according to him). However, with United hovering around the relegation zone in his final season, he was sacked with United in tatters.

Jose Mourinho has openly said that he did not receive the backing of United’s higher ups in the transfer market. He criticised the club for their failure to land a centre back. While the club did purchase Fred and Diogo Dalot, other major targets such as future signing Harry Maguire were avoided.
In a recent interview, Manchester United’s executive vice-chairman has now revealed the reason behind their refusal to meet Jose Mourinho’s player demands in the transfer windows.

“It is true that there was a difference of opinion on one or two players between the manager and the recruitment department,” Woodward told United We Stand.
“Sometimes I have to be one who delivers the ‘no’, which isn’t easy, because our natural tendency is to back the manager in every possible circumstance, but we have to listen to the recruitment experts too.”
Ed Woodward admits he did say ‘NO’ to Jose Mourinho’s transfer requests.

It is perhaps time to reconsider the advice Woodward receives from regarding the players. Especially, considering the players United have bought post Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement and their performance since. The statement regarding his recruitment department is made even worse considering, they eventually bought Harry Maguire at a much higher price than they could have got him for under Jose Mourinho.
