“That is asking too much”- Ferrari boss replies when asked about matching Mercedes
“That is asking too much”- Ferrari boss replies that matching Mercedes standards would be a stretch and should have more realistic goals.
Ferrari is nowhere near thinking about this season anymore, with the last three remaining races won’t change their current predicament in Formula 1.
When asked about whether they will be planning to match the standard of Mercedes’ engine, to which Binotto replied that it will be unrealistic and would be aiming for a realistic goal like matching Honda and Renault’s engine.
“Currently, we don’t have the best engine but next year we can have a completely new one,” said Binotto. “Can we reach Mercedes? Perhaps that is asking too much since it means gaining between 40 and 50 horsepower,” Binotto said.
“But being on par with Honda and Renault today would in itself be a remarkable step forward. We have to bear in mind that only one engine specification will be allowed for the whole of 2021, except for minor details. There is no room for error,” he added.
Ferrari still in the race for top-3
Despite Ferrari being overshadowed by their competitors this season, and currently standing 7th in the table, they still have a chance to rise at the 3rd position in the table.
There are 3 races left in the season, and Racing Point is just 24 points away from them. If things turn chaotic Ferrari still has a chance to be in the third position at least on paper.
Even if the Italian outfit fails to end at 3rd position, they still could take a 2-3 rank promotion by the end of the calendar. However, Ferrari has a lot to recover before they match their past glory.

Now, with Carlos Sainz coming in to join Charles Leclerc, they have a dynamic yet young lineup for next season. Over here, patience will be a key for the Tifosi.
