Mac Jones has “a pretty good understanding” of the Patriots says Bill Belichick
Mac Jones was praised by Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick for already “understanding” the Patriots offense and more.
The competition between Mac Jones and
Cam Newton is becoming more intense. Both are dueling for the starting quarterback position during training camp.
Mac Jones has a “pretty good understanding of the things that we do” says Bill Belichick.
This indicates how Jones is perhaps already impressing the Patriots staff. Understanding the team’s offensive scheme is vital in order to blend in effectively.
“I think Mac has a pretty good understanding of the things that we do,” Belichick said.“He has to go out there and do them and get comfortable with them, so it’s a process.”
“We’ve had a number of other players at that quarterback position come in and go through that. Some, it starts a little slower and then picks up. Sometimes it starts a little higher and slows down. We’ll just have to see how it goes.”
However, Draft Network’s Benjamin Solak distinctly stated “Jones is not a scheme fit in New England”. A big reason for this being that only 30% of Jones’ throws were between 0-10 yards. “Belichick passing game is not vertical—it simply isn’t.” said Solak which is where the biggest problem arrives.
“We’ll just have to see how it goes”: Belichick plans on waiting it out
The Patriots Head Coach declares his plan is to let the process happen and let Jones get comfortable with the offense.
Former Crimson Tide standout Mac Jones was selected with the 15th overall pick by the New England Patriots in the 2021 NFL draft.
Will Mac Jones start for the patriots?
It currently hasn’t been decided who will start at the Quarterback position. Cam Newton was the starter last season. He played 15 games, throwing for 8 touchdown passes and 2657 passing yards.
Newton will most likely start the first few games. If not living up to expectations, Jones may takeover and could possibly be the long term solution for the Patriots.
