“He wanted to be a dominant wrestler. They didn’t want him to be” – Kurt Angle explains why former ECW Champion failed in WWE
Kurt Angle explains why former ECW Champion failed in WWE. The WWE Hall of Famer detailed reasons that led to the former ECW Star’s underwhelming run.
The WWE have imported several of their talent from other promotions. Think Hulk Hogan and the AWA, Triple H and Stone Cold from WCW, RVD from ECW and many more. For all of these successes however, there are several others who did not quite reach their potential. Former ECW World Champion Taz is one among them.
Speaking on his podcast on AdFreeShows.com, WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle revealed that creative differences between Taz and Vince McMahon regarding the Taz character led to his underwhelming stay with the WWE.
Vince considered Taz a ‘smaller guy,’ and wanted him to portray the underdog in his matches. Taz however, saw things differently.
Kurt Angle explains why former ECW Champion Taz failed in WWE
“I think the reason was Vince McMahon had this idea of Taz being a smaller guy and selling for the big guys and never giving up. Taz had in his mind that he wanted to be a dominant wrestler. They didn’t want him to be.
“He didn’t himself want to be the underdog that was fighting, and that’s the reason why they kind of ended Taz’s career a little early was because he had a different idea of what the creative had for him.
“And then they made him a commentator, so that was pretty much the end of Taz’s career. I don’t think he lasted that long after this.”
Taz is currently on AEW where he also serves as the color commentator. He also plays the part of the leader and spokesperson for Team Taz, which recently saw the departure of Brian Cage.
