“All I have to do is pick up the phone”: LeBron James Shows a Tinge of Arrogance Over Son Bronny’s Case for College

LeBron James made a statement that caused some furor recently. The Lakers superstar boasted that his son Bonny James was good enough to go to any college he wanted.

LeBron claimed that all he had to do was pick up the phone. Bronny, according to LeBron, is a player any college would want. But Bronny is listed as a four-star rated prospect by ESPN.

Despite that the ‘James’ name was enough, by August 2022, he was on the radar of multiple universities. Memphis offered him an offer in the same month.

LeBron’s Controversial Comments on Bronny sounds peckish

“I think Bronny can go to any college he wants to. All I have to do is pick up the phone. If Bronny says he wants to go there, he’s good enough.”, LeBron said of his son.

LeBron’s comments were bound to raise some hackles. They inevitably did. Twitter users questioned if Bronny was genuinely good enough. Some pointed out that if he was as good as LeBron claimed, then he would be receiving offers. LeBron didn’t really need to do anything in that case.

What angered most people was the idea that Bronny was abusing his privileges. Having one of the all-time greats as your father already gives you some privileges others do not have. If in addition to that, if he went on to pull favors, it seems a lot like nepotism.

Bronny’s Future: the college shortlist is down to 3!

Of course, LeBron and Bronny have had different lives. By the time he was in high school, LeBron was one of the hottest prospects in the nation. The level of hype that surrounded LeBron was unprecedented and has not been matched yet.

In addition, LeBron lived up to the hype. By any metric, LeBron is at the very least one of the greatest ever to play basketball.

Bronny on the other hand is very different. Standing at 6 foot 3 inches Lebron’s oldest child is a very talented high school prospect.

However, he is nowhere as talented as LeBron was. Neither is he a generational talent. It is this background that made people consider LeBron’s remark to be tone-deaf.

Despite that, the colossal amount of attention means colleges do want his name on their board. LeBron James Jr. has already whittled down his college list to his top 3. It is only a matter of finding out where he lands.
