“I Passed On It”: Peyton Manning Regrets Rejecting Documenting Himself After Leading Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins’ Netflix Docuseries
Peyton Manning is responsible for getting Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins, and Marcus Mariota on Netflix’s new docuseries Quarterback, and he feels regretful that he didn’t take up such an opportunity himself. Peyton Manning missed the entire 2011 season with a neck injury, and at the time, one of the founders of NFL Films, Steve Sabol, approached Manning to see if he wanted to be filmed about his recovery. However, Manning wasn’t thrilled by the idea and passed up on it. Now, he looks back and sees that it was a wasted opportunity.
Netflix will be released Quarterback on July 12th, and it will follow the lives of three major quarterbacks in the league, Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins, and Marcus Mariota. Each of these quarterbacks has had such different experiences in the NFL. Mahomes is the face of the league right now, the MVP, the Super Bowl champ. Cousins is a dark horse contender a perennial Pro Bowler who just can’t seem to make it into the elite class of the NFL. Mariota is now a journeyman in the NFL, a stopgap for teams looking for more permanent solutions at the position, and a solid backup.
Quarterback will find a way to showcase how each of these different quarterbacks has had to adapt to the harshness of the position, both on and off the field.
Peyton Manning Discusses the Opportunity Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins, Marcus Mariota Have
Peyton Manning is the producer for Quarterback, making it all the more enticing. However, if you had asked Manning to be on such a show earlier in his career, he would have denied the chance.
Manning appeared on the Pat McAfee show to promote the show and offer some insight about the production. He first acknowledged how tough being a quarterback and appearing on such a show was.
Mariota was benched last year the week he was becoming a father. Manning also thinks that there are conditions to appearing on such a show. He believes that the show wouldn’t be a good idea for a young quarterback, but it would be for an older player.
Manning also delved into how when you sign up to play quarterback, you’re signing up for everything. On the good side, you have what Mahomes had last year, but on the flip side, you have Mariota’s situation.
You have to be able to compose yourself in every situation. That’s why Manning believes that he rejected a documentary on his rehab. He didn’t know how it would play out, and he wasn’t ready for it. “I passed on it,” he tells Pat McAfee.
