Shaquille O’Neal Causing a Blackout in the Arena with a Monster Block Resurfaces

Shaquille O’Neal is widely regarded as the most dominant player ever and this instance proves exactly why. During a game against the Phoenix Suns at Staples Center, Shaq blocked the ball so hard that it caused a blackout in the entire arena.

The big man has had many superhuman moments on the basketball court throughout his career, which include breaking backboards and bending the rim. However, none of them compare to the block that led to the arena lights flickering at Staples Center.

The play happened against the Phoenix Suns when the road team attempted a fast break on the Lakers. Rex Chapman tried to drive to the basket for a lay-up attempt. But Shaq swatted the layup attempt by Chapman with incredible force.

The magnitude of the block caused a 1-second blackout during the live broadcast and also temporarily disabled the Arena lights.

The cables attached to the backboard were connected to the lights and linked to the TV connection as well. When the ball hit the backboard with so much force, it caused a 1-second long interruption in the telecast.

The play-by-play announcers seemed to be in shock as well of the move. They kept on talking about it as the players looked confused on the court, trying to figure out what had happened.

Perhaps because of this incident the NBA soon decided to change the process of setting up wires in the backboard.

Rex Chapman, who was on the receiving end of the block, was also amused recently by the repercussions of the play. The Phoenix Suns player reacted with a laughing emoji on Twitter after the video resurfaced in May 2023.

The game in question also happens to be Shaq’s debut game with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1996. After playing for the Orlando Magic for four years, the big man was ready to prove himself on the big stage under the brightest lights. The game took place on the first of November, which also happened to be the opening night of the 1996-97 NBA season.
