“We Go to Therapy”: Dwyane Wade, Admitting to Infidelity in His Relationship with Gabrielle Union, Revealed Just How Difficult It Was to Tell Her
While it’s not out of the ordinary for a celebrity power couple like Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union to be regularly in the headlines, they have been on the news far too often in the last few years. The couple’s acceptance of their teenage daughter Zaya’s transition triggered a wave of backlash and hate from different circles. However, that was not everything that put the couple’s conjugal life under scrutiny. During a recent sit-down with former FS1 host Shannon Sharpe, Wade revealed how his infidelity ushered in a tumultuous phase in his relationship with Union.
Wade and Union met in 2007 but didn’t start dating till 2009. The couple went public with their relationship the next year. In early 2013, the two of them decided to split up briefly because of their busy schedules. During this break in their relationship, Wade reportedly fathered a child with reality TV star Aja Métoyer. The former Miami Heat star would later reveal to Shannon Sharpe that revealing the truth to Union was more taxing for him than losing in the NBA Finals.
Dwyane Wade recounted how he informed Gabrielle Union about his infidelity
Wade made an appearance on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast in June. Midway through the conversation, Sharpe asked the Hall-of-Famer whether revealing his infidelity to his partner was more painful than losing in the NBA Finals in 2011 and 2014. Wade immediately confirmed that initiating the talk with Gabrielle was much more heartbreaking than the two Finals losses in his career.
The three-time NBA Champion said, “[Grimacing] Way harder [than losing in the Finals] to have a conversation with my now-wife…about it. You try to think about everything possible…It’s all scary…You know this is gonna hurt someone you’ve been building a relationship with, a life with!…I couldn’t have gotten through that moment without her sticking with me. That was a rough time for me. You’re keeping something from the people you love and its heavy.”

“It hasn’t been perfect. It will never be perfect. We go to therapy, been to therapy. We’ve had shouts about it, regular conversations about it. It’s going to continue to be something that I have to work at and work on,” Wade added. He also expressed his deep regret about the fact that his son has to now bear the stain of his mistake despite not doing anything wrong.
Wade and Union got married in 2014 after signing a pre-nuptial agreement
Overcoming the storm in their relationship, the couple eventually got engaged in late 2013. Before tying the knot next year, Gabrielle Union revealed on the Arsenio Hall show, that she and her fiancée would be signing a pre-nuptial agreement to protect their assets before marriage.
Union maintained that the agreement simply signified a gesture from both of them that they are in it for each other and not for any monetary gains. The couple welcomed their daughter Kaavia James in 2018 after struggling with infertility for a few years.
