Vengsarkar on Dhoni’s poor form: “Everybody goes through this phase”
Vengsarkar on Dhoni’s poor form: Not playing all formats and domestic cricket has affected Dhoni’s form, believes former India captain.
Former India captain and current wicket-keeper batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s indifferent form in the recent times has tempted plentiful opinions from across the world.
While some of them have criticised the 37-year old cricketer for his lack of runs, the others have batted for him adding much more to the Indian team than his batting. While the former cricketers and fans have been divided over the same, the Indian selectors have confirmed as Dhoni being their No. 1 wicket-keeper.
Vengsarkar shares his opinion
Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar has become the latest cricketer to lend his views on the topic. Calling Dhoni as one of India’s greatest cricketers, Vengsarkar was of the opinion that not playing all formats and domestic cricket has affected Dhoni’s form.
In an interview with Hindustan Times, he was quoted, “Dhoni has been one of India’s greatest cricketers and finest captains. But everybody goes through this phase. He is fit but his form is suspect. That is because he doesn’t play all the formats and doesn’t play domestic cricket as well. It is tough to straightaway come and play international cricket.”
Dhoni will play the fifth ODI against Windies at Thiruvananthapuram tomorrow before going to Australia to play the three-match series in January.
Vengsarkar questions playing two wicket-keepers
Vengsarkar took a jibe at India’s plot of playing two wicket-keepers in the same playing XI recently. Citing the team selection as ‘not’ up to the mark, Vengsarkar said, “They can’t have two wicket-keepers in the team. The selection of the playing XI has not been up to the mark.”
