Chelsea qualified in the Champions league by virtue of winning the Europa League last season. The Blues were guaranteed a spot in Europe’s premier tournament courtesy their 3^rd place finish in the Premier League. However, their Europa conquest ensured that they were placed in the 1^st Pot.

With one team from each pot constituting a group, Chelsea avoided facing the likes of Barcelona and Bayern Munich along with the teams from the English contingent. They find themselves in Group H with Ajax, Valencia and Lille.

On paper, they have one of the easiest draws. However, Ajax and Valencia are plucky opponents who can hold their own against the toughest of opponents and even beat the best on their day. Lille, the 4^th team in their group, are the lowest-ranked side in the competition according to UEFA’s Coefficient Ranking but could still pose problems. Chelsea will not have it as easy as it seems. Frankly, though, it could have been much worse.

Chelsea are under new boss Frank Lampard and are currently finding their feet under their club legend. The Blues have been hampered by their transfer embargo but are slowly rallying behind their manager and should be expected to reach the round of 16. Ajax and Valencia should fight it out for the second spot. While Lille, in all probability, will end up with the wooden spoon.

The Champions League will start from 17^th September. The group stages will last till December 11^th after which, the knock-out stages will begin. The tournament will conclude next year on 30^th May at the Atatürk Olimpiyat Stadı, Istanbul.
