Eoin Morgan admits it was unfair to crown England as World Champions on boundary count after a tied Super Over in the finals at Lord’s

England team captain Eoin Morgan has admitted that his team’s maiden World Cup triumph via a superior boundary count than New Zealand’s was unfair, especially upon deciding a World Champion.

Chasing 241/8 posted by New Zealand, England somehow managed to draw the match in the very last ball of the innings. But, this was not it. Even the Super Over which followed thereafter ended in a tie with both teams scoring 15 runs apiece. England however, were crowned the World Champions on scoring more number of boundaries (26 over 17) during their respective innings, including the Super Over.

Now, perhaps after having soaked in all the madness and euphoric celebrations that he has been deservedly part of, England skipper Eoin Morgan has finally admitted that it was ‘unfair’ to be crowned as World Champions on the basis of a superior boundary tally, as there was nothing to separate the two sides during the entire course of the match.

“I don’t think it’s fair to have a result like that when there’s very little between the sides,” Morgan told The Times. “I don’t think there was one moment that you could say: ‘That actually cost the game there.’ It was quite balanced.”

“Spoke to Williamson a few times post the final”- Morgan

Morgan said that he has been speaking to Williamson, with whom he has played on a number of occasions in the Indian Premier League, about the game.

“I spoke to Kane over the last couple of days on numerous occasions and none of us has come up with a rational explanation as to the various times we gave them the game and they gave it back to us. Like me, he can’t get his head around everything,” he said.

It is worth mentioning that both the skippers were part of the IPL franchise- Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) when they had won the title in the year 2016.

The 32-year-old also agreed that the final was probably the greatest ever cricket match. “By a long way. I can’t think of a game that’s come close. Madness. I should be cheery about it, shouldn’t I?” he said.
