“Nothing Else Is Good Enough”: Toto Wolff Puts Mental Health in Jeopardy in Quest for Mercedes F1 Excellence
While things may be looking up for Mercedes, it is nowhere close to what the eight-time champions are capable of. From dominating the top step of the podium enough to leave people tired of seeing their colors up, to calling it a good day at P4-P5. A lot has changed since the 2022 season.
What hurts more? Their biggest rivals have taken their throne, although on merit. Thus, even Toto Wolff admits that there’s nothing they can do but change themselves.
💬 "It’s a busy window in the calendar with five races in six weekends, and we want to keep on making small steps forward."

However, one can only imagine what Wolff is going through. For someone so accustomed to winning, the pressure is on for the Austrian. Further, he has revealed struggling with his mental health in the past, opening up to needing therapy as a result.
Valtteri Bottas, still close friends with his former boss, provides insight into how “stressed” Wolff has become, and it’s all because of his winning mentality.
Valtteri Bottas reveals Toto Wolff’s secrets over Mercedes’ downfall
In conversation with Tom Clarkson for the Beyond the Grid podcast, Bottas revealed that he still shares a good relationship with Wolff. Sharing a quick chat here and there, Bottas noticed something different in the Mercedes team principal.
“I’ve known him for a long long time and we have a chat every now and then. He seems a bit stressed at the moment, which is fair because the only thing good for him is winning. Nothing else is good enough.”
However, despite the team reassuring fans that there is a solution in the works, nothing tangible has been noticed. This too piles onto the burning list of problems on Toto Wolff’s mind. Bottas added, “I’m sure he’s pushing himself and everyone to the limit to get back in front.”
After the race in Baku, Wolff admitted that there were only two ways they could catch up with Red Bull- change the regulations or change themselves. While the former isn’t on the table right now, Wolff throws the ball to his team.

“We either have to do a better job – all of us together to catch them up – or change the regulations and I don’t think we should be doing the second one, I think we just need to win on merit and winning on merit means being more clever and having a steeper development slope than Red Bull.”
The pressure to push Lewis Hamilton back to his rightful place on top is a mega task for Wolff, who is clearly breaking a sweat. However, there is a lot to look back to, and maybe one day we’ll see the Silver Arrows life the constructor’s trophy once again.
