Recalling His ‘Best Overtake’ Ever, Max Verstappen Confesses His Fear for His Profession Has Grown Over the Last 7 Years
In 2016, after being regarded as a prodigy for a year, Max Verstappen finally unveiled his true brilliance to the world. That year not only he became the youngest F1 race winner ever but also showcased some daring moves. Seven years later, Verstappen goes into the past and recalls his overtake against Nico Rosberg as the best overtake he did in his career. However, as per Formula Passion, he admits he won’t ever do that again, as he fears his profession more now than he did back then.
It was ferociously raining over Interlagos when the race was supposed to happen. The damp conditions made the competition risky. But the Dutchman didn’t bat an eye while making that breathtaking move. Even today the video reappears on social media with fans only admiring the audacity of a 19-year-old to pull that move against the champion of that year.
But Verstappen is very different from his 1016 self. Firstly, he is a two-time world champion, going for his third title. At the same time, he is more cautious, as per his own admission.
Max Verstappen confesses his fear has grown
Verstappen going back in time regarded this overtake by him on Rosberg as the best overtake of his career. However, out of fear, he claims he will never do that again.
“Looking back, I probably had less fear at the time. I didn’t really look at what could happen to it. I probably wouldn’t do the same maneuver now, but it also depends on the position in the championship. At the time I had nothing to lose and I did. And I have to say that looking for grip elsewhere for me is a typical move: especially if the whole weekend has been dry, you go to the race and it’s wet and you try different things,” said Verstappen.
While Verstappen is surely a more cautious driver as the stakes are higher compared to when he started. But that doesn’t limit him to take risks or push to the limit when required.
The Dutchman is flying
Over the last eight races, Verstappen has been majestic. The 25-year-old driver isn’t ready to be defeated, and soon enough would seal the championship. And with his form along with crucial performances by his teammate Sergio Perez, Red Bull is currently undefeated this season.
However, that doesn’t mean, Verstappen hasn’t been closely challenged. There have been times, when it felt other times might be catching up, like Lewis Hamilton’s qualifying in Hungary, or Oscar Piastri’s sprint shootout in Belgium, it felt Verstappen could be challenged.
This final sector is honestly so underrated. The fact that Max can go from 2 tenths down after the middle sector to pole by almost a tenth in a car that’s dominant in a straight line and not in technical sections is astonishing.

However, his ability to obtain the minor difference at the last second is optimal. Moreover, he is always ready to risk, even if he’s winning. In Austria, he made an added pitstop only for the fastest lap while he was winning the race by a comfortable margin.
