Four famous cricketers who lost their lives on the cricket field

While it is not exactly a dangerous sport cricket has had its share of unfortunate accidents on the field. Sometimes though, things went a little too far as some players lost their lives playing the game that they love.

November 27th 2014 will forever be remembered as one of the darkest moments in Australian cricket as Phil Hughes lost his life playing a domestic game between South Australia and New South Wales.

On his third death anniversary, let’s look at some other cricketers who lost their lives whilst playing the game.

Darryn Randall

In 2013, Darryn Randall was playing domestic cricket in South Africa when disaster struck. The wicket keeper batsman was attempting a pull shot when he got hit on the side of his head by a stinger bouncer.

Randall collapsed immediately and had to be rushed towards the hospital. But despite their best efforts, the doctors could not revive the cricketer.

Alcwyn Jenkins 

Jenkins was actually an umpire on the filed when he was struck by a ball that was travelling in his direction.

He was hit on the head by a ball that was accidentally thrown in his direction by a fielder. Jenkins was air lifted and taken to the hospital but unfortunately could not make it in time and lost his life.

Raman Lamba

The former Indian international lost his life while playing a club match in Dhaka. Lamba was fielding at short leg when he was hit on the head and suffered serious brain injuries.

Lamba was in coma for three days after the incident before being pronounced dead.

Phil Hughes

Three years ago, Hughes was playing in a domestic match between New South Wales and South Australia when he was hit on the head by a fatal bouncer.

Hughes death was a huge blow for world cricket as the safety of cricketers once again came into the limelight. The Australian team were deeply affected by this incident as several members of the team could hardly come to terms with Hughes’ death.

In a touching gesture, the then Australia captain Micheal Clarke dedicated their 2015 World Cup triumph to Hughes’ during the presentation ceremony.
