Having Karate Chopped 21-year-old Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal Pays Homage to Mamba With Michael Jordan's 'Tearful' Speech

In a surprising revelation, basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal recently took to social media to reminisce about a memorable incident from his early days with Kobe Bryant. The incident, which involved a karate chop, symbolized a turning point in their relationship and ultimately led to a deep bond between the two NBA icons. Shaq’s Instagram post not only showcased their journey from feuding teammates to close friends but also paid tribute to the late Kobe Bryant through a heartfelt video.

This connection becomes even more poignant as it was Michael Jordan’s tearful speech at Kobe’s funeral that inspired Shaq’s recent homage.

The Karate Chop Incident

The incident in question occurred during one of the Los Angeles Lakers’ intense practice sessions. Shaq vividly recalls the moment when Kobe, with his fierce determination and relentless pursuit of perfection, began to demand fouls for every contact. It reminded Shaq of Michael Jordan’s notorious reputation for being untouchable during practices. Frustrated, Shaq confronted Kobe, suggesting that he didn’t need to call those fouls. Kobe responded defiantly, asserting that Shaq wouldn’t label him with derogatory terms anymore. In response, Shaq impulsively gave him a light karate push to the head, a gesture he had used before when upset with others but never intended to harm them.

Speaking about what instigated the incident, Shaquille O’Neal recalled on Shaq Uncut

“Suddenly, you can’t touch him in practice. He’s acting like Jordan, where some players thought you couldn’t touch Mike. Whenever somebody ripped Kobe, he’d call a foul. After a while, I’m like, ‘Listen, man, you don’t have to start calling that punk sh**.’ Kobe puffs his chest up: ‘You ain’t gonna be calling me too many more punks, motherf***er.’ ‘What’d you say?’”

Narrating the incident, Shaq continued:

“I lunged at him, gave him a little karate push in the head. Same thing I did sometimes to people I was upset with but really didn’t want to hurt, only a little less because he was my teammate.”

Shaquille O’Neal’s Homage

Fast forward to today, Shaq’s Instagram post pays homage to Kobe Bryant in a poignant way. The post captures the journey of their relationship, highlighting the growth they experienced both on and off the court. The video shared by Shaq showcases memorable moments they shared, including their championship triumphs, mutual respect, and the friendship that blossomed over the years.

In this tribute, Shaq expresses his deep admiration for the Mamba mentality that defined Kobe’s career, demonstrating the immense impact his former teammate had on his life.

Shaq’s Regret and Reflection

While Shaq’s karate chop incident may seem contentious, it played a significant role in shaping the dynamic between the two basketball legends.

In a recent tweet shared by Bleacher Report, Shaq reflects on his regret for resorting to physicality during their altercation. He acknowledges the immaturity and frustration that led him to react in such a manner. The tweet conveys a profound sense of remorse, illustrating the growth and maturity he experienced following his interactions with Kobe.

Despite their initial differences, their shared experiences and mutual respect allowed them to build a strong bond that endured until Kobe’s untimely passing.
