Having Picked Kobe Bryant Over LeBron James, Stephen Curry Explains How Lakers Legend Gave Him One of the Best Compliments: “Recognized the Killer Instinct Behind the Smile!”

Stephen Curry’s documentary Underrated is out on Apple TV, which explores the journey of an underrated kid from school to college to the NBA. Curry has been promoting his documentary for which he also did a puppy interview recently, where he picked his favorite 5-man team. The four-time NBA champion had Kobe Bryant on his team, which surprised many. On the BigBoyTV podcast later on, he talked about Kobe Bryant and why Mamba holds a special place in his heart. Curry spoke in detail about the time that Kobe complimented him, recognizing the killer instinct behind the Baby Face Assasin.

Curry welcomed Kobe’s compliment like good news. Obviously, coming from the Mamba himself, those words had pearls embedded in them. “I appreciate that compliment because you know it’s coming from somebody who knew what that energy was like,” remarked Curry

During the interview, Curry was asked to pick his all-time starting five, and to everyone’s surprise, he chose the legendary Kobe Bryant for the small forward position. This decision sparked intense debates among NBA fans, with many questioning his choice over LeBron James, known for his versatility and dominance on the court. Although, he didn’t consider himself making the team.

Kobe Bryant said Stephen Curry had a deadly calmness about him

It’s not just Curry who had immense respect for the late great Los Angeles Lakers legend. Both superstars shared a mutual respect for each other’s games. Compliments coming towards Kobe, given his resume, are obvious. However, even before Steph became an MVP, Mamba knew that the Warriors star was a serious problem. As rare as his compliments were for the opposing player, he made it worth it when he gave one. Kobe gave one of the best compliments on Curry’s game in an interview. This is what he said;

I see a calmness about him. I think that’s something a lot of players don’t understand… But there’s a serious calmness about him which is extremely deadly. He’s not up, he’s not down. He’s not contemplating what’s just happened before or worrying about what’s to come next – he’s just there. And when a player has the skills and has trained himself to have the skills to be able to shoot, dribble, left, right, etc. And then you mix that with this calmness and poise, then you have a serious, serious problem on your hands.”

Over the years, Curry has achieved so much in the game and has become the greatest shooter in NBA history. He has won two MVPs, four championships, and a Finals MVP to his name. He also has a three-point record to his name.

Kobe Bryant predicted that Stephen Curry would eventually become a superstar

Chris Paul, the Golden State Warriors star guard player, was on the season finale of Uninterrupted, ‘The Shop’ with famous rapper Killer Mike. LeBron James, who could not make it to the finale, shared a story of Mike reminiscing about the moment he met Kobe.

Bryant was retiring in 2016, so he asked his favorite player who he should follow after he retires. “‘It’s this kid if he could stay healthy because he’s skinny. He’s this kid named Stephen Curry,’” Killer Mike recalled the 18-time All-Star player seeing the future of the NBA in Curry.

Firstly, it is always great to watch star players support and appreciate the greatness of other players. Secondly, Mamba was a student of the game and, at times, transcended to become a teacher. He knew exactly why SC30 would become a problem for the league.
