"Lakers have a lot of decisions to make and I'm not at the top of that list": All-Star Marc Gasol hints that he might part ways with LeBron James and co

After playing for one year with the Los Angeles Lakers, big man Marc Gasol hints that he might not be back with the team for the next season.

Entering the 2020-2021 season the Los Angeles Lakers were the strong favourites to win their back-to-back title. In order to strengthen their title aspirations, the organisation added a few pivotal role players to the squad. One player out of the new acquisitions was Spanish big man Marc Gasol.

The 36-year-old veteran was expected to have a huge impact on the team while being a mentor-like figure for most of the young guns on a stacked team like the Lakers. However, getting knocked out of the first round of the playoffs, this campaign was nothing close to what the L.A.-based team must’ve imagined. And Gasol had a tiny role on the squad to have a major impact.

Playing a career-low 19.1 minutes per game, the former NBA champ averaged only 5 points (career-low), 4.1 rebounds (career-low) and 2.1 assists per game. It is safe to say that Gasol’s 1-year stint could be deemed as unsuccessful.

Marc Gasol hints that he might not be joining the Lakers for the next season

The 6-foot-11 big man was signed on a 2-year deal with the Lakers in the last off-season. However, in a recent interview, Marc subtly hinted that he would be parting ways with the 2020 NBA champions. Gasol said:

“Obviously they have a lot of decisions to make and I’m not at the top of the list of those decisions. We’ll see later on this summer how the team moves and what they want to do, what the plan is. Right now, I think everything is so fresh. No one planned to be having those meetings right now. I don’t think they fully know what the plan is yet, so I think we all need that time to reflect.

“I’m very thankful for the year that I lived. I know obviously, it didn’t end the way we all wanted. But it’s been better than it looked from the outside for me personally. I just enjoyed some of the things that happened, some of the other things I didn’t. But I tried to be positive and like I said, I’m thankful for the opportunity that I had here.”

“Obviously you guys know my family history with the team and how much it meant to Pau. So for me to be here and play for this team was an honor, and it is an honor. So I didn’t take it for granted for one second.”
