“Rachel Nichols’s career shouldn’t be erased by a single comment”: Adam Silver controversially backs up the ESPN analyst amidst the Maria Taylor debacle

Adam Silver says careers should not be erased due to a single comment in regards to Rachel Nichols after her tiff with Maria Taylor.

Rachel Nichols found herself in some hot water recently as a phone call conversation between her and an advisor for LeBron James leaked. In these calls, Nichols profusely claimed that she was unhappy with Maria Taylor getting her job as host of NBA Countdown during the NBA Finals and that the only reason Taylor got the job was because ESPN was trying to diversify their cast of analysts.

This call being leaked opened up a can of worms that led to Rachel Nichols being removed as the sideline reporter for any NBA Finals coverage. She was replaced by Malika Andrews, who is also a woman of color. Nichols has come out and apologized for her comments but fans were not reciprocative of her apology as they deemed it to be too short and ingenuine.

Adam Silver has now stepped into this debacle and given his thoughts on what should be done in regards to the situation.

Adam Silver believes Rachel Nichols cannot be ousted from the NBA scene after one comment.

In a recent news conference, Adam Silver was asked about what has taken place at ESPN between Rachel Nichols and Maria Taylor. Silver seemed to be a bit sympathetic towards Nichols than expected given her comments.

“They require very labor-intensive effort. Creating a climate where people are comfortable satying what’s on their mind, where people are given the benefit of the doubt, especially long-term employees that are in good standing. Careers should not be erased by a single comment.”

Adam Silver also claimed that it was “disheartening” to see two women pitted against one another. “They’re both fantastic at what they do. This is a really unfortunate situation,” said Silver when talking about Rachel Nichols and Maria Taylor.
