“Weird” Coach Mike McDaniel Has a Hollywood Flick-Like Origin Story Which Powered the 5’9″ & 180 lb Man to Land a Prestigious NFL Job
Dolphins’ Mike McDaniel has emerged as one of the best head coaches in the NFL right now. He has been instrumental in reviving the Dolphins ever since his appointment in 2022. Just this past week, McDaniel proved his mettle as he led the Dolphins to a historic 70-20 victory over the Denver Broncos in Week 3 of the 2023 season, the first time a team scored 70 or more points in the Super Bowl era.
McDaniel, who was playfully referred to as a weird guy by his own player Jalen Ramsey a little while back, actually has a pretty interesting origin story. As reported by Joe Pompliano, he went through several hurdles before landing a prestigious NFL job, and getting to where he is now. Moreover, his destiny, and more importantly, his Hornets hat, played a huge role.
A Chance Encounter at 10 Years Old Sets the Stage for His Destiny
It all started for McDaniel at the tender age of 10 and his run-in with Broncos assistant video director Gary McCune. A huge fan of football, 10-yo McDaniel once lost his Hornets cap hat at one of the training camp practices he had cycled to watch. That’s when he ran up to McCune sobbing, asking him to help find his precious hat.
The hat was never found but McCune and McDaniel ended up scripting a special story. The assistant video director ended up falling in love with and marrying McDaniel’s mom. As Mike got to spend more time around the Denver Broncos, he soon secured a job as a ball boy during his senior year in high school.
Mike McDaniel is one of the NFL’s best coaches — and the story of how he got there is WILD.
It involves a fortuitous meeting at 10 years old, an academic scholarship to Yale, getting fired by the Houston Texans, a stint in rehab, and much more.

McDaniel then ended up going to Yale on a scholarship but didn’t make much of a mark as a college football player, in part due to his small frame. But he was diligent and he loved the sport, and he got recognition for his ability to predict plays. An ability that is surely coming in handy to him now.
Mike McDaniel is a “Little Weird”?
All head coaches in the NFL have their eccentricities, and McDaniel is no different. Cornerback Jalen Ramsey joined the Dolphins for the 2023 season, though he is out due to injury right now. At the introductory conference last year, Ramsey had some interesting opinions about his coach.
When asked what he thinks of his new coach, Ramsey without a thought blurted out that he’s a “little weird.” He quickly followed up with, “But we’re all weird in our own way. He’s not fake. He seems cool.” Ramsey hasn’t gotten a chance to play with his new coach yet, but has his opinion changed in the past year?
