Dana White throws light on the next Strawweight title fight; Says Weili Zhang is targeted to fight Rose Namajunas this year in Asia.
With the emergence of the global pandemic, the boundaries of UFC curtailed to a large extent. Since the resumption of action (May), the sport has been contained in the go-to facility of Apex Center and the fancy bio-bubble of Fight Island. But, with the alleviation phase in place and as the vaccines have started to roll out, the plans are in process from the UFC’s side to widen its reach.
As the leading MMA promotion in the world, in 2020 UFC saw exponential growth in its popularity, which is a sign that people from various nationalities have gained interest in the supreme MMA action. Therefore, as the promotion has a history of pioneering, it may apparently decide to reward the public by visiting their backyards. And Asia might be the part that they will start with.
Dana White Exploring Route To Asia With Weili Zhang Vs. Rose Namajunas
In an interview with ESPN, UFC president Dana White talked about the future fight ideas of Weili Zhang, who is the UFC Strawweight champion and last stepped inside the Octagon in March 2020. White revealed that the work is in progress to book her alongside Rose Namajunas, and also stated about culling in someplace in Asia to host the event.
“We’re working on her, too,” White said about Zhang. “Obviously, the fight that everybody wants to see is her and Rose. Hopefully, we can get that done. If not, the next one in line would probably be Carla Esparza. We’re looking at doing that fight this year and in Asia.”
While, Abu Dhabi, the place where Fight Island is situated also comes under Asia but, it seems Dana White is implying that the fight will take place in some other part of the same continent. Maybe, at the time when the general public will be allowed to gather in huge numbers. The very place could be China since Weli Zhang is a native of the country, and is a huge role model there, moreover, because UFC has conducted a couple of events in China in the past.
