After the controversial post-All out brawn out with CM Punk, The Elite finally returned at the recent Full Gear PPV. There were also reports that Punk and AEW were in talks over a potential contract buyout. However, there were no further updates regarding the matter in the last couple of weeks. Now, Dave Meltzer has shed some light and revealed new details about the current status of CM Punk with AEW.
During the post-All Out media scrum in September, the Straight Edged Superstar bashed top AEW stars leading to a backstage fight. All the men involved were then suspended which made Punk a villain of the whole dispute. Although The Elite made their return, the 2-time AEW champion was believed to be done with the company.
Report claims CM Punk wants to move but is held back by AEW
In the recent Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer discussed the current AEW status of CM Punk and the latest about the buyout negotiations. According to him, the Straight Edged Superstar is not done with the company yet. Meltzer noted that as of last weekend, CM Punk was still in contract and being paid by AEW.
However, he further went on to add that those close to Punk say the delay is from the AEW side. Meltzer claimed CM Punk is ready to move on to his next project but it is Tony Khan, who is desisting. He stated:
“Those close to [CM] Punk say the hold up on his being released is all on the AEW side as he’s ready and willing to move to his next project.”

Well, if Meltzer’s report is believed to be true, there could be two reasons behind the delay. One, he is trying to convince CM Punk to return, and two, it could his way to punish the Straight-Edged Superstar for his action. Anyway, it is certain that his controversial stint with AEW is far from over.
The Straight Edged Superstar made one of the biggest pro wrestling returns last year
Since his departure from WWE in 2014, CM Punk claimed in many interviews that he is done with the squared circle. However, that neither stopped fans from wanting his return nor him from doing that. Last year, at AEW Rampage: The First Dance, the Straight Edged Superstar finally made his return to the ring.
Although Punk’s initial months with AEW were exceptional, things slowly started to get ugly backstage. One thing led to another which eventually led to September’s post-All Out Backstage fight.
Nevertheless, considering Dave Meltzer’s latest revelation, it seems the back-and-forth is still going between CM Punk and AEW. However, wrestling fans would want the whole thing to get sorted out as soon as possible.
