Stone Cold WrestleMania 39

Stone Cold Steve Austin’s stellar performance at WrestleMania 38 substantiated he still has a lot left in the tank. Austin headlined the first night of WrestleMania and defeated Kevin Owens in a singles match. The Texas Rattle Snake made his way to the ring once again after Pat McAfee’s match with Austin Theory and went into a frenzy dishing out stunners to Austin Theory, Vince McMahon, and Pat McAfee. The six-time WWE Champion made his return to in-ring competition after almost two decades and, surprisingly, looked as good as he did in his prime.

It’s been reported that Austin is gearing up for one more match at WrestleMania 39. The only question is, who will his opponent be? Over the past few months, many names have been spitballed as Stone Cold Steve Austin’s potential opponent for WrestleMania.

At one point, even CM Punk was brought up as his possible opponent at the show of shows. A new report states that WWE was in talks about pitting Stone Cold against Brock Lesnar at Mania.

Brock Lesnar was pitched as Stone Cold Steve Austin’s opponent for WrestleMania 39

As noted, there were initially speculations about various wrestlers facing Austin at the grandest stage. Fightful Select initially reported that WWE was pushing for Roman Reigns to wrestle Steve Austin at WrestleMania 39. The report stated that the latter was offered an “enormous” amount of money to wrestle Reigns.

However, Wrestling Observer Radio’s Dave Meltzer revealed that it was Brock Lesnar who was pitched to wrestle Steve Austin and not Roman Reigns. According to him, their potential clash has been discussed internally for months.

“The [Austin] match that was not Roman Reigns, it was Brock Lesnar,” Meltzer said. “But as you can tell pretty much by the show [last night], it’s not happening.”

“It’s not on. Something can happen now. It’s been talked about probably for months. I know when that Brock Lesnar-Gunther thing came up, I was told immediately that’s not happening or that’s not the idea right now, maybe it’s gonna happen now but the idea was something that’s a secret. Austin was that secret.

Meltzer also noted that the match is highly unlikely to play out due to what happened at Monday Night Raw’s 30th anniversary. Since Lesnar returned and attacked Lashley, it is likelier that The Beast Incarnate will face The Almighty at Mania.

However, the duo will square off at the Royal Rumble and may even drag their rivalry to the elimination chamber and so, we cannot fully rule out Austin Vs. Lesnar at Mania. Meltzer also added that when Gunther was pitched as a potential opponent for Brock Lesnar at the show of shows, he was told that Lesnar’s opponent would be a “secret” alluding to Steve Austin.

But what about Roman Reigns Vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin at WrestleMania 39?

Since Fightful’s report about Stone Cold Steve Austin being offered a huge money deal to face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39 has been negated, it turns out that his opponent will be revealed on Saturday after the Royal Rumble match. Meltzer further stated that the winner of the Rumble will move ahead to challenge Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39.

“As far as Roman Reigns, I don’t know, but I figure that whatever Roman Reigns’s situation will be, we will know on Saturday night based on who wins the Rumble.”
