Vince McMahon and CM Punk

Talk about the best rivalries in pro wrestling, the feud between John Cena and CM Punk will always be among the top ones. Although the Straight Edged Superstar left WWE earlier than expected, both men have still delivered some memorable moments. However, during one of their matches, CM Punk did something that made his boss Vince McMahon angry backstage.

The incident took place on the February 25 episode of Monday Night RAW back in 2013. In the main event, Punk faced the Cenation Leader to decide The Rock’s opponent for that year’s WrestleMania. The match was excellent, John Cena and CM Punk gave their best, but Vince McMahon was still angry. Here’s why:

CM Punk using a Piledriver on John Cena wasn’t received well by Vince McMahon

Piledriver is a move so dangerous that if not executed properly, it can end the career of an athlete. The biggest example of that is the 1997 SummerSlam match between Steve Austin and Owen Hart. During the match, Owen botched the piledriver and broke the neck of Stone Cold. Looking at the risk factor, Mr. McMahon rarely allows anyone to use it as a finisher.

However, during the CM Punk John Cena match, the former used the finisher which the latter kicked out. Although the Straight Edged Superstar delivered the piledriver properly, it wasn’t received well by Mr. McMahon backstage.

According to several reports back then, Vince McMahon was angry with CM Punk for using that move on John Cena. In fact, in a Q&A a few years ago, Punk admitted his actions in the ring weren’t taken well backstage.

Anyway, talk about the match, John Cena eventually won the match and faced The Rock later at WrestleMania 29. As for CM Punk, he was never happy about how Vince McMahon booked him and in 2014, he left the company.

The Former CEO has been trending in the news again for his recent storm within WWE

Last year in July, following the hush-money allegations, the 77-year-old decided to retire from the company. However, by the start of 2023, he announced his return which in fact, he did within days. Mr. McMahon forced himself back into the WWE Board and is now intending to sell the company. In fact, there are chances WWE will be sold by the end of this year.

All of this has been happening despite the Board unanimously opposing his return. Moreover, after Vince’s comeback, his daughter Stephanie McMahon resigned from the position of CO-CEO and Chairwoman. And not just her, but a few members of the board have also decided to quit the company following all of this. Many suspect it’s just a matter of time before Triple H will also be out of WWE Creative.

Nevertheless, this month saw Vince’s shocking arrival, Stephanie’s resignation, and a lawsuit filed against Mr. McMahon. And the way the 77-year-old has behaved so far, nobody knows what will happen in the coming weeks or months.
