Super Bowl 2021 Weather Forecast : Tom Brady vs. Patrick Mahomes won't be the only thunder in Tampa Bay

There’s a high chance of a thunderstorm this February 7th. NFL fans know the game won’t stop – that players are trained to play in all conditions. But, when will the game stop? How do weather conditions affect NFL games?

NFL players are tough. They play through every weather – rain, snow, heat, you name it. It’s very rare to see an NFL game get cancelled due to weather.

It’s interesting to look at when the game does get cancelled however.

Can NFL Super Bowl be cancelled in case of Harsh Weather?

NFL games are only cancelled in the case of tornados or lightning strikes within the area. In the case of a heavy hurricane, Hurricane Harvey for instance, games may be cancelled as well.

Teams are often given the option of whether to play the game or cancel, depending on the harshness of the weather. They are not penalised for their choice.

Another reason why NFL games may be cancelled is if there are issues relating to fan safety. In 2010, prior to the Sunday Night Football game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Minnesota Vikings, a huge snowstorm fell upon the game. The game was postponed to Tuesday due to concerns relating to fan safety in the blizzard.

However, it must be noted that games don’t get ‘cancelled’ in the sense of the word. NFL games are mostly postponed, or are played in a different stadium that isn’t affected by the weather conditions. The only times games were cancelled were during the player strikes of 1974, 1987, and a couple other years.

But, back to the Super Bowl, the weather conditions are nothing to worry about. Teams have battled worse, and there’s nothing that will postpone the game this Sunday. Brady versus Mahomes will take place as planned, and that’s the only real thunderstorm brewing in Tampa.
