Kyrie Irving sends stern warning to NBA parody maker Maxisnice for imitating sage-burning incident: “Don’t disrespect my ancestors with your gestures”
Popular basketball parody creator Maxisnice posted an imitation video of Kyrie Irving burning sage at the TD Garden. The Nets star did not take it well.
Maxisnice is a YouTuber with 118k subscribers and over 1 million followers on Instagram. He first gained fame for imitating Lonzo Ball’s walk in the Pelicans guard’s rookie season with the Lakers. He has built on this with a series of similar videos – all in good humor.
Maxisnice’s work has earned recognition from the likes of LeBron James himself. This is a guy who makes all of his work with the sole purpose of poking simple fun. Just take a look at this absolute laugh riot of a video.

Kyrie Irving responds to video from Maxisnice mocking his sage-burning routine

Kyrie Irving responded with this statement on Instagram:
“I respect your comedy, but tell your ignorant counterpart @maxisnicee do not disrespect my ancestors or indigenous cultures with his gestures. It’s sacred to us Natives to burn sage and it’s a remembrance of the people who died to preserve our customs.”
@KyrieIrving if you wanna do it , we can family … 😒😭🥊🤷🏻♂️ . pic.twitter.com/9EqG9SlWhM

The easy, non-fussy way out of this ‘situation’ for Max would have been to clarify up front that he meant no disrespect in his apology. He chose, however, to take more shots at Kyrie with a reply in the comments: “2nd degree burn, y’all.”
Max further escalated this by posting a pro boxing match as a challenge proposal to Kyrie. He’s earning tons of criticism for these actions, as people believe this confrontational attitude was uncalled for. In subsequent tweets, Max is refusing to back down, and continues to state that he’s just messing with Kyrie for fun.
