“Ben Simmons is overrated”: Wizards’ play-by-play announcer casually indicts Sixers All-Star for his inability to score

A number of people believe Ben Simmons to be an overrated player. Justin Kutcher, a play-by-play announcer for the Wizards, is in this camp.

Ben Simmons is considered one of the strangest prospects in the NBA today, given his length, strength and speed. He is a perfect candidate to run your transition offense – sometimes as a scorer, sometimes as a passer.

But other than that, Simmons’ offense often leaves a ton to be desired. He is exposed as a limited half-court player whenever he plays with bad shooters alongside him. There’s a reason why Daryl Morey was ready to trade him for James Harden.

Pointing that out to Sixers fans, however, is a recipe for abuse and disaster. That’s exactly what Wizards’ play-by-play announcer Justin Kutcher is guilty of.

Justin Kutcher goes after Ben Simmons during Sixers’ win over Washington

Commentating at a point when it was clear that the Sixers would get the W, Kutcher got into it last night. He insinuated that Simmons has gotten into All-Star teams a couple of times based purely on hype. He held onto that notion in a post-game tweet as well:

“Yep, I said that Ben Simmons is one of the most overrated plyrs in the NBA, and I stand by it. I didn’t say he was BAD, just not as good as everyone makes him out to be. GREAT defender, potential DPOY, but I think he’s made All League/All Star Teams based on hype. And..goodnight.”

He might have a case for this season – Simmons was averaging the fewest points per game of his career for much of January. He picked his act up from February onwards, but he still does not average great scoring numbers.

Kutcher did mess up, however, by suggesting that Tobias Harris would be a better selection for the All-Star Weekend.
