“I trust Ferrari”- Guenther Steiner drops his feedback on the new power unit by Ferrari, which is believed to be better than its predecessor.
Ferrari and its customers had a tough campaign in 2020, with the Italian outfit finishing P6 on the constructors’ table last year. Now, viewing a comeback, Ferrari promised an engine upgrade, and so far, it sounds to be better.
Haas’ team principal Guenther Steiner, whose team finished P9 on the table, gave feedback on the new power unit, and he is not being critical of it and draws a diplomatic picture.
“I would say a medium step. I can’t say it’s a big step because then I would show that I am happy and I can’t do that to Ferrari (laughs). In motorsport, it is never enough; if you say it is enough, then something is wrong,” said Steiner to RTL.
“I think the engine is a step forward, but we don’t know what the other engine manufacturers have done. I don’t have their numbers. I don’t even have the numbers from Ferrari. I trust Ferrari when they tell me that the engine is better.”

Steiner then revealed that he had some early results of this year’s engine when it was released for internal production during the second half of 2020, and during that time, he wasn’t friendly to Steiner at all.
“We knew last year, in the second half of the season when the engine was released internally for production, how it would be. I wasn’t friendly about the engine last year, and Mattia heard that in private talks. They made a step forward.”
While Ferrari seems to make a step forward, Haas seems to take the degradation route, as it hasn’t applied its development tokens and would be handled by a rookie pair.
Moreover, it hasn’t shown any progressive signs during the tests either, so there isn’t much to look forward for the only American team in F1.
