“We want to see him grab the job and kina run with it”: Eagles GM Howie Roseman wants Jalen Hurts to come into his own next season
The Philadelphia Eagles traded away Carson Wentz, making most people assume that Jalen Hurts would be QB1 for 2021. However, speculations around Hurts’ starting job rose after GM Howie Roseman said that there would be a QB competition for next season. But Roseman may have finally hinted at Hurts starting job.
Jalen Hurts was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2nd round of the 2020 NFL draft. He started 4 games in 2020, going 1-3 while having both great and horrid moments. Hurts completed 52% of his passes for 1,061 yards with 6 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. However, he torched defenses on the ground, rushing for 354 yards and 3 scores.

Jalen Hurts definitely didn’t cement his starting spot in the 4 games that he played. But he did have moments of brilliance that warrant him at least another season at the helm. And since the sample size is small, the Eagles are definitely banking on Hurts’ upside coming through in season 2.
Howie Roseman wants Jalen Hurts to grab the starting job in 2021.
“You’re judging him off of four NFL starts in a tough situation with all of the injuries that we had. We want to see him grab the job and kind of run with it,” Roseman said. “See what you do over a period of time. I remember you told me this a long time ago, the more work you can see a player play, the more you can make decisions on that player.
“I remember we talked about this when we’re talking about even extending players early versus getting the full body of work. I think that applies here to Jalen. We want to be in a situation where we get as much information as possible. Give him the best opportunity, build that offensive line, give him the right weapons, and put him in a system that really maximizes his ability. Then go from there.”

This is the first public endorsement that Howie Roseman has made for the Oklahoma Sooner. And the 2021 Eagles draft class is proof of the same. The receiver needy Eagles drafted arguably the best receiver in the draft in Alabama WR DeVonta Smith with the 10th overall pick. And they did this even though QB’s Justin Fields and Mac Jones were on the board.

The Eagles should be able to get a cleaner evaluation on Hurts this year. The Eagles’ offensive line should be healthier, they drafted a receiver in the first round (one who has played with Hurts before), and Hurts will have a new head coach with a fresh scheme designed to play to his strengths.
