Isaiah Thomas and Quinn Cook are two former Lakers who think they can lend them a helping hand in the absence of LeBron James and Schroder.

The Lakers are suffering from a spate of offensive playmaking talent of late. LeBron James hasn’t played well in over 7 weeks while Dennis Schroder is out due to Covid protocols till the fag end of the season.

They’ve dropped 7 of their last 8 games now, and are in real fight-or-flight mode. Their loss to Damian Lillard and his Blazers last night dropped them to 7th place in the Western Conference.

They have 5 games remaining this season now, but they might as well kiss their top-6 chances goodbye if they play like last night. Their offense was plodding and lacked bite and imagination.

They laboured through their offensive sets, practically telegraphing their every offensive move. It’s a wonder that they were able to make a game of it, but then Frank Vogel is an excellent defensive coach.

LeBron James might well be back to see the Lakers over the line in their last 5 games of the regular season. But he’ll still need somebody to play the playmaking role when he sits. This is exactly the scenario when a 3rd-string point guard comes in handy.

Players like Isaiah Thomas and Quinn Cook are lining up to stake their claim in the NBA. Isaiah posted about how he could’ve helped the Lakers in their pickle last night. Cook responded with the same sentiment.

Alex Caruso has looked downright terrible as the Lakers’ starting point guard in his limited minutes playing that role. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Kyle Kuzma are terrible stopgap solutions to this conundrum. Perhaps Rob Pelinka might really have been better off retaining Cook or signing Isaiah.
