“I was very offended” – RVD recalls Paul Heyman booking that offended him
RVD recalls Paul Heyman booking that offended him. Both of these men worked together during their time at Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW).
Rob Van Dam is a legend of the wrestling business. Most fans today know him for his time in the WWE. However, it was ECW where he started to make a name for himself as a future megastar. You can imagine how surprised he must have been knowing Paul Heyman hadn’t booked him on their first ever pay-per-view, ECW Barely Legal.

An injury to Chris Candido saw Heyman draft RVD in his place. He went on to beat Lance Storm in a 10-minute match. However, the victory did little to mend this broken ego. Speaking on the latest episode of WWE Icons, the WWE Hall of Famer, spoke about how he felt upon knowing Heyman had kept him off their very first PPV card.
RVD recalls Paul Heyman booking that offended him
“I was very offended that the first chance ECW has to put its foot forward and show everybody what extreme is about, you’re not gonna have RVD? Because my ego did tell me that I was one of the best, most entertaining wrestlers on the card. I did believe that.”
Within the same episode, Heyman explained that he took the decision he made because he wasn’t sure how long RVD would be with them and he only wanted those he thought had a long term future with the company.
“Rob Van Dam was not booked on Barely Legal because I did not know how long we were gonna hold on to Rob Van Dam. I needed that first pay-per-view to be very ECW-branded. And I didn’t know how long Rob Van Dam was going to be associated with the ECW brand.”
