Billy Corgan reveals why WWE refused to buy NWA. The once dominant wrestling governing body is now trying to find its feet as a singular wrestling promotion.

The NWA once dominated the wrestling scene in the United States. They acted as a governing body for the various wrestling promotions in the country and protected the territorial integrity of their  members. However, WWE’s national expansion under Vince McMahon severely damaged their standing as the most powerful wrestling body in the US.

In the years since, they have continued to bleed whatever prestige it once had and now operate singularly as a wrestling promotion under owner Billy Corgan. The NWA president was recently a guest on the Talk Is Jericho podcast where he confirmed that the WWE turned down the offer to buy NWA.

Billy Corgan reveals why WWE refused to buy NWA

Corgan told Jericho that he was proud to own NWA even if it wasn’t what it was during its heydays. He also revealed that WWE chose not to purchase the promotion because they believed it was worthless.

“I’m proud to carry the mantle of the business in this way. It’s a very specific thing, and of course, the business is far different than it was in the heyday of the NWA. There’s no pretend there. When I bought the NWA and that was coming out of the whole situation with TNA and the debacle and lawsuits, and there was a lot of kind of public acrimony there.

“And then I purchased NWA. Crazily enough, it was owned by one person. It was so devalued. He tried to sell it to everybody. Nobody wanted it, as far as I know. He certainly offered it to WWE. They thought it was so worthless that they didn’t even just buy it just to take it off the market.”

“Then when I bought it, Jim Cornette and other people, and I loved Jim. ‘What the hell did he buy? He might as well have bought air. He bought three worthless letters.’ A lot of that type of stuff and certainly I sat around at one point and thought, ‘Well, if I started, Billy Corgan Wrestling or SP Wrestling’, and I thought, no, I want the history. I’ll take that history. I’ll take that on. I like the challenge of that.”

Earlier tonight, the promotion announced two pay per views on August 28 and 29. The first will be their first-ever all-women’s pay-per-view, titled NWA In Power and the second will be the NWA 73rd Anniversary show, titled NWA 73.
