“They Never Told Me What To Play”: Archie Manning Narrates the Story of His First Ever Game To Peyton Manning
Peyton and Eli Manning are undoubtedly two of the greatest QBs in the history of the NFL. Their journeys, which also came with 2 Super Bowl wins apiece, have been one many new QBs look up to. Naturally, one might expect they had a role model to look up to when they were growing up. Which they did, only that their role model QB was also their dad, Archie Manning.
Archie Manning was the second overall pick in the 1971 NFL Draft, by the New Orleans Saints. His debut came against a rampant Los Angeles Rams, details of which he remembers even after 50 years. That game was the start of a journey lasting 13 seasons, one that would see him make it to the Pro Bowl twice. Though he never made it to the playoffs, he is still considered one of the best QBs in history.
Archie Manning recalls the game that set the scene for his future success
Archie Manning’s famous victory against the Rams on his debut happened almost 50 years ago. Talking about the game to his son Peyton Manning, he recalls how he had to improvise in the dying moments of the game, and how that gamble came close to becoming a disaster. Though it ultimately paid off, listening to it from Archie does send a tinge of excitement down the spine.
According to Archie, he called the Saints last time out to discuss a play with the OC to help score on the next play. However, the pair only ended up disagreeing with each other on every suggestion. When his teammates asked him about what play the OC suggested, he said, “They never told me!”. Archie ended up calling his favorite play from college, “spread left”, which got him to the endzone.

Peyton and Eli honored their father’s legacy with their own illustrious careers
While Archie may have fallen short of bringing home a Super Bowl Ring, his sons more than made up for that by bringing home 4. The sibling rivalry has become one of the most talked about contests in the NFL community, and the most entertaining as well. Though Eli currently holds the upper hand with the latest Pro Bowl win over Peyton, expect them to go head-to-head again soon.
Archie, on the other hand, is no longer in a competitive mood. He is currently an analyst for the Saints’ radio and TV broadcasts and also commentates on college games for CBS. He also owns a football-themed restaurant in New Orleans, called ‘Manning’s Sports Bar and Grill’. Archie seems content in his retired life. Unlike his two sons, who are still going at each other well after their football days.
