Tom Brady’s Attempts to Trademark ‘Tom Terrific’ Were Crushed to Preserve a Baseball Legend’s Legacy
The legacy of the NFL legend Tom Brady has earned him several nicknames in his career. But when it comes to Tom Terrific, there shouldn’t be any debate. Although NFL fans like to associate it with the former quarterback, the Mets fan base wouldn’t let that happen, just like how the U.S. Patents office rejected Brady’s request to trademark it. To date, it irks several football fans worldwide and remains an embarrassing moment in the quarterback’s career.
When the name Tom Terrific pops out, the first picture that comes to everyone’s mind is Baseball Hall of Famer Tom Seaver. His unparalleled legacy is revived by this nickname, and the US Patents office wasn’t ready to lose this honor to a whole nother person.
Tom Brady wanted to trademark “Tom Terrific”
Only a few people in this world get to achieve success of this caliber. And certainly, Brady falls under this category. It was the time when he was still playing for the New England Patriots, poised to lift his sixth Super Bowl trophy. He extended a proposal to trademark the Tom Terrific tag to the U.S. Patents and Trademark Office.
Within a couple of days, the request got rejected. All those plans to secure this nickname backfired. Fans roasted the then-quarterback for stealing someone else’s identity and establishing a brand under this domain.
The U.S. Patents office justified their dismissal notice by saying that the name had a connection with a living individual and could mislead people in the future. If he ever rolls out a commodity under this tag, consumers might find it inappropriate and hence the rejection.
It took no time for this news to spread like wildfire across social media, and Brady had to come forward to give clarity on the entire situation. “It’s unfortunate,” Brady said, per USA Today Sports. “I wanted to keep people from using it, then it got spun around to something different than what it was,” he added.
Brady’s TB12 is growing at a rapid pace
Although the Seven-time Super Bowl champion couldn’t bag the Tom Terrific tag, he succeeded in building a business empire around his own name. The BRADY brand, the TB12 wellness company has reached great heights.
The brand is associated with an apparel company that manufactures and sells some exotic sports gear. They promise quality and technology as a major differentiator and have greatly succeeded in scaling their business. Its value is estimated at around $1 billion in the US market.
Similarly, the TB12 wellness company is a nutrition-based firm focusing on the diet and fitness regime of the former NFL quarterback. It has a huge customer base and boasts a net worth of $22.4 million. It will be interesting to see how long these companies succeed in capturing the market and skyrocketing Tom Brady’s wealth accumulation.
