"Chances of Carlos Alcaraz v Novak Djokovic Really Slim": Fans Give Thoughts on AI Analysis of US Open Draw

Technology giant IBM ran an AI analysis on the US Open men’s singles draw to find which player had the most favorable run. The result showed that Novak Djokovic has the most favorable draw at Flushing Meadows, followed by Carlos Alcaraz. This prompted reactions from fans, with many hoping this meant they would face off in the US Open final. One fan, however, said it was unlikely for a reason.

The fan claimed that the finalists of the Cincinnati Open never make it to the final of the US Open. This claimed statistic is not true, but even if it were true, Djokovic and Alcaraz would be the best bets to break the curse. The two best tennis players right now have been in incredible form this year. Even if they don’t face off in the final, it is almost guaranteed that at least one will make it to the championship match.

AI analysis says Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz have the easiest draws

The US Open and IBM joined hands to analyze the men’s singles draw with AI. The official Twitter (now X) account of the tournament revealed the findings. Novak Djokovic had the most favorable draw, followed by Alcaraz. Jannik Sinner, Daniil Medvedev, and Frances Tiafoe complete the list.

Djokovic has Stefanos Tsitsipas and Taylor Fritz in his quarter, both of whom can be the Serb’s potential quarter-final opponents. In the run-up to the last 8, the biggest test he could face is Felix Auger-Aliassime. With the momentum and quality he has, Djokovic can storm through this field.  Alcaraz is in the same quarter as Jannik Sinner, who is predicted to be the Spaniard’s quarter-final opponent. Potential run-ins for Alcaraz before the quarter-final include Dan Evans and Cameron Norrie. The World No.1 can see himself through.

If they reach the final four, the draw places them in opposite semi-finals. A final could be on the cards. However, one fan on Twitter said that Cincinnati Open finalists never reach the final of the US Open and hence a Djokovic vs. Alcaraz final is improbable in New York. The factoid is not completely correct.

Roger Federer and Djokovic played in the 2015 Cincinnati Open final and then had a rematch in the 2015 US Open Final. The Swiss won the ATP event while the Serb bagged the Grand Slam. However, the fan’s claim rings true if 2015 is treated as an exception. That is the only time since 1990, when the ATP Masters format was introduced, that a pair has achieved this double.

Other fans also chimed in with their inputs on the AI analysis. Fans backed their favorite players to reach the final. Many agreed with this fan that a repeat of the Cincinnati Open final is unlikely.

Fans discuss AI analysis of the US Open draw

Ever since the US Open draw was revealed, many fans have held the belief that Djokovic has received an easy path. The AI analysis confirmed these fans’ claims, and a handful of fans on Twitter mockingly called the draw rigged.

Those in favor of seeing a Djokovic-Alcaraz final expressed joy at the AI analysis. Fans have long been asking for that fixture in the final of the American Grand Slam.

A large section of fans took objection to Sinner being ranked third. They said the Italian has been handed one of the toughest draws ever and the AI ranking is incorrect.

A Djokovic – Alcaraz final is more likely than not. However, the field is full of quality players who can step up and prove to be worthy challengers. Regardless of who plays the final, the tournament will be exciting.
