Chennai Open: Find who the star attraction is going to be?

The star attraction for the upcoming Chennai Open is going to be world Number six Marin Cilic who will be playing in the singles filed. Chennai open is the only ATP 250 tournament in India. The matches are going to be played at SDAT Tennis Stadium in Nungambakkam from 2 January.

About Cilic

Marin Cilic is a Croatian professional player whose biggest success to date is having won the 2014 US Open. Over his career Marin Cilic has won 16 ATP single title. Marin Cilic first came to international prominence by defeating then World No. 2 Andy Murray in the fourth round of the 2009 US Open.

Marin Speaks his mind

When asked by journalists about his participation in the Chennai Open Cilic said “I am so happy to announce on the day that I have broken into the top six that I am coming back to India to play in front of adoring Chennai fans,” “

The 28 year old star made his first appearance in Chennai Open in 2008 and since then has been a mainstay at the event.  He won the trophy in 2009 and 2010. The Croatian star will be eager to make it a grand treble at one of his favourite tennis destinations.

“I hope to break into the top five, and the top three, this year. I feel Chennai is a lucky hunting ground for me, and will help me achieve my immediate goal. Further it will be a great way to begin 2017,” Marin Cilic said.

Cilic has been in great form this year winning titles at both Cincinnati Masters and the coveted Swiss Indoor title. He has also made a number of upsets already in this calendar year beating World No 1 Andy Murray, Serbian superstar Novak Djokovic and Japanese Kei Nishikori.

MA Alagappan, TNTA president said, “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Tamil Nadu government for their continued support to our tournament. It’s an honour for us that Cilic is coming back to the Aircel Chennai Open. He has been in great form and will bring an extra edge to the competition.”
