During the fifth day of the third Test of the ongoing West Indies’ tour of England in Manchester, veteran England seamer Stuart Broad has become only the fourth fast bowler to grab 500 Test wickets.
Overall, Broad is the seventh bowler after Muttiah Muralitharan (800), Shane Warne (708), Anil Kumble (619), James Anderson (589), Glenn McGrath (563) and Courtney Walsh (519) to surpass the 500-wicket mark in Test cricket.
It all happened on the third delivery of the 14th over when West Indies vice-captain Kraigg Brathwaite (19) was found wanting in front of the stumps. With the ball keeping low and hitting Brathwaite on the back leg in front of the stumps, he didn’t opt to review the decision.
Broad, who registered bowling figures of 14-4-31-6 in the first innings, has picked all the three West Indian wickets in the second innings. Another wicket in this match will witness the 34-year old player registering his third 10-wicket match haul.
After rain affected the play briefly in the first hour, players returned to the field in the series decider. While England need six more wickets to win the series, West Indies still require in excess of 300 runs to win the match. Given the recent form of their batsmen, the visitors would be looking to draw the match and retain the Wisden Trophy.
