Evil Geniuses shock the world by taking down Heroic, the #1 CS:GO team in the world at BLAST Spring

The 2023 CS:GO season is off to a doozy of a start as a monumental upset has been pulled off. After nearly two years of being the laughing stock of the CS scene, Evil Geniuses have rebuilt and taken down the best team in the world. The first game of the BLAST Spring groups pitted EG against Heroic, and no one expected the former to win. Not only did the underdog drag Heroic to all three maps, but they also managed to topple the best in the end.

Final map scores:

  • Inferno (Heroic’s pick): 16-7 to Heroic
  • Ancient (Evil Geniuses’ pick): 16-14 to Evil Geniuses
  • Overpass (Evil Geniuses’ pick): 16-14 to Evil Geniuses

EG came into the new season with a huge roster move. Swapping out the veteran Cerq for a rookie CS:GO AWPer in wiz, the move was met by criticism by many. However, the AWPer was instrumental in bringing Autimatic and co. to a win.

Starting off on Inferno, Heroic looked primed to annihilate EG right off the bat. The first half was absolutely devastating for the NA squad, only managing to put up four T rounds. Things didn’t get better on the CT side, winning only three rounds and losing 16-7. The MVP of the map was IGL Casper ‘cadiaN’ Møller with a 23-12 k/d and 1.64 rating.

Switching to map two, EG put up a much better fight. The first half was a lot more competitive, as EG managed to pick up 11 rounds themselves. However, Ancient is notorious for being CT-sided and Heroic began clawing it back in the end. The match was decided by brilliant B site takes from EG that netted them the 16-14 win. The MVP of the map was Sanzhar ‘neaLaN’ Iskhakov with a 1.17 rating and 22-17 k/d.

The last map of Overpass was another nail-biter as both teams traded blows from round 1. No clear winner could be predicted, coming down to the last round of the game. A flubbed defuse at 15-13 by EG allowed Heroic one last chance at redemption, but EG shut that down promptly. Dashing Heroic’s hopes with a 16-14 win, map MVP, Timothy ‘autimatic’ Ta, ended his campaign with a 1.50 rating and 26-19 k/d ratio.
