Dota 2 is one of the most well-known multiplayer online battle arenas (MOBA). The game has recently undergone a significant ranking system update. After these recent changes to the game, Forsen finally revealed his Dota 2 ranking on stream.

Sebastian “Forsen” Fors is one of the biggest Twitch streamers, who is famous for his Minecraft streams. Since 2021, he also got himself into Dota 2, and over the years, he kept getting better in the game.

Forsen was playing Dota 2 on a recent live stream. After winning a match, he received a pop-up message congratulating him on reaching a new rank in the game. Forsen had reached Guardian II, which meant his matchmaking rank (MMR) points ranged from 924 to 1077.

Despite winning, the Twitch streamer was unimpressed with the match. “I cannot play the game at all, dude,” he claimed. “I’ll be honest, there’s way too much f**king silence.” The streamer was then surprised to see his new Dota 2 rank and said, “Guardian, that’s right.”

His reaction suggested that this rank was lower than he expected. His disappointment can be justified since he’s been playing the game for about three years. According to him and his fan base, Forsen has the potential to be a player ranked higher than Guardian II. However, his ranking may have deteriorated because of the new Dota 2 ranking system.

The new Dota 2 ranking system

Since this MOBA game came out in 2013, it used the Elo algorithm to assign a player their in-game rank. But over the years, Valve found out that there are many flaws in this system. The biggest one is for players who take extended breaks from the game and have trouble playing at that same rank upon returning.

Dota 2 ranking system

Since Patch 7.33, Dota 2 started using the Glicko algorithm for ranking a player. It is the same system that Valve uses for their other games like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Team Fortress 2. This new algorithm focuses more on a player’s confidence in ranks for Valve to calculate their rank more accurately.

Many Dota 2 players’ rankings were reset due to the new ranking system. Some players who had been gone from the game for an extended period observed a significant decline in their ranking. However, if the algorithm determines that the player is fit for that rank, they can return to their previous level.
