This article will look at the best boss fights in the God of War franchise. These will also include the Greek pantheon, not just the Norse ones.
The boss fights in GoW are a thing of beauty. No games besides these have made fighting supernatural enemies and Gods so entertaining. To condense the multitudes of fights in one is the hardest thing we have ever done, but these are our picks. The picks are based on scale, fun factor, and overall epicness. Let us look at the list.

5 of the Best God of War Bossfights Ever
Note: We could not let some choices go, so some picks on this list will have two boss fights.
#5 – Ares in GoW 1/ Sisters of Fate in GoW 2
We bring them together because the GoW 2 boss fight takes Kratos right back in time to when he fought Ares. Kratos fights the sisters at the top of the sword he used to slay Ares in the first game. The boss fight with Ares was also a thing of beauty. Seeing Kratos grow to Ares’s size after opening Pandora’s Box was satisfying and a satisfying end to the horror we went through in the game.
#4 – Cronos, The Titan in GoW 3/ Hades in GoW 3
Speaking of scale, both of these boss fights knew how to establish that Kratos was strong for his size. Don’t get the wrong impression; Kratos is big, but these guys are humongous. Riding on Crono’s shoulder and cutting away his organs was satisfying. The Hades boss fight was a battle of warriors, and it ended with Kratos literally ripping Hades’s soul out of his body.
#3 – Zeus in Gow 2 and GoW 3
Zeus was a menace. His multiple-attack combinations did huge damage, and the fact that we were the size of a mountain in GoW 2 was irritating. GoW 3 amped it up by having us fight inside Gaia’s rib cage while Kratos slaying both of them simultaneously. Zeus comes back in his corrupted form, but as Kratos is too angry to die, he finds a way to defeat his father and punch him to death in GoW 3, don’t let the kids near this boss fight, folks.
#2 – Baldur (Both Encounters) and Magni & Modi
These guys were tough, but they were fun. The first encounter was beautiful; we saw Kratos use his signature lift everything and throw fighting style while Baldur was using wrestling moves. Magni and Modi were a deadly combination, the back-to-back sequence with Atreus was a beautiful addition, and the way Kratos kills Magni shows that he still is the God Killer.
#1 Thor and Odin in God of War Ragnarok
The boss fights we were all waiting for did not disappoint. The tension between Kratos, Thor, and Odin was palpable, and it exploded when Kratos led a charge to Asgard. The boss fight with Thor was nothing short of jaw-dropping, with both sides giving it their all, while Odin’s boss fight truly felt like the end of the sage. Outstanding in scale, gameplay, and grandeur.
