MS Dhoni surpasses Mark Boucher

MS Dhoni surpasses Mark Boucher: During India’s first innings today, Dhoni achieved yet another milestone in ODIs.

Irrespective of the numerous varied opinions which are being put forward with respect to him, former India captain and current wicket-keeper batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni continues to achieve major milestones in ODI cricket.

In the 20 matches which Dhoni has played this year, he has scored 275 runs at an average of 25 and a strike rate of 71.42. If his batting numbers are only to be taken into consideration, 2018 is by far the worst year for Dhoni as a batsman.

That being said, the general notion of ‘He contributes more to the team than just runs’ keeps him going in the national team, which to a great extent is the truth as well. Among his major contribution is his wicket-keeping as well. In the same genre, Dhoni is now only behind Adam Gilchrist and Kumar Sangakkara in terms of most ODI dismissals by a wicket-keeper.

In the 332 ODIs which has played at the highest level so far, he has affected 425 dismissals, out of which 310 are catches and 115 are stumping dismissals. With 472 and 482 dismissals respectively, Gilchrist and Sangakkara are ahead of him. Dhoni overdid former South Africa wicket-keeper Mark Boucher (424 dismissals) in the feat.

It is worth mentioning that Dhoni has the record of most ODI stumping dismissals to his name – 115. The next best on the list is Sangakkara, who had affected 99 dismissals during his playing days.

In terms of numbers, there is a huge difference between Dhoni and the duo above him. Whether he will be able to surpass them or not remains the big question, answer to which can’t be given at this point in time.

Dhoni, 37, will next play for India during the ODI leg of their tour of Australia in January next year.
