“Victor Wembanyama Has a Target on His Back!”: Kevin Garnett Reaffirms Faith in Spurs Rookie Weeks After Making Giannis Antetokounmpo Comparisons

Victor Wembanyama is one of the most exciting rookies in the NBA for the 2023-2024 season. The French center has been hyped and as such has had high expectations placed on his shoulders. So much so, that every move he has made since being drafted has been scrutinized. This includes his first Summer League game, where his performance was less than ideal. But, despite the disappointing start, there are those who showed faith in him. Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett, is one of those who backed up Wembanyama a few weeks ago on the KG Certified podcast. Now, he has reaffirmed that faith while also sending the No.1 overall pick a fair warning.

KG was in awe of Wembanyama on the most recent episode of his podcast. He is incredibly impressed by the San Antonio Spurs’ newest superstar. To the point, where he even compared him to the likes of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokic. He explained how polished the 19-year-old looks compared to the two other men when they were rookies. And, how he looks like he could be the next dominant force in the NBA.

Kevin Garnett reaffirms faith in Victor Wembanyama before warning him about his future in the NBA

Victor Wembanyama has just played two Summer League games so far, and expectations for his debut are already through the roof. Fans are excited to watch him perform on the big stage, with many believing he has the potential to be one of the greatest players of all time. But, it’s not just the fans who have high hopes for Wemby.

NBA legend, Kevin Garnett is also looking forward to watching Wembanyama’s career progress. While he does concede that he is the No.1 rookie heading into the 2023-2024 season, he also believes that the Spurs star deserves a fair warning.

In a recent video, KG was all praise for Wemby and hyped him up as the next big thing in the NBA. However, he also warned the Frenchman, that things will only get tougher from here on out. In particular, he pointed out that the youngster will now have a target on his back, much like he had coming out of high school.

“He’s No. 1. Absolutely he has a target on his back. … Coming from high school, I had a bunch of targets on my back. But that’s part of it.”

There can be no denying the Big Ticket’s statement. He is absolutely right when he says that Wembanyama is the No.1 player in the 2023 rookie class. But, he is also right when he says that this puts a huge target on his back. A target that he will have to deal with as a professional player.

Despite all the hype, there are those who believe Wemby isn’t a surefire superstar just yet

While most of the world is hyped to watch Victor Wembanyama play, there are those who still doubt him. NBA players like Paul George and Draymond Green have expressed concerns over how Wemby will transition to the NBA and have even refuted suggestions that he will be an All-Star in his rookie year. Similarly, UNDISPUTED analyst Skip Bayless has also pointed out flaws in Wemby’s game.

In general, there are far too many people expressing their hopes and concerns for Wembanyma. He is certainly a great prospect, but it’s still important to remember that he hasn’t even played his first proper NBA game yet.
