Joe Burrow, Patrick Mahomes

As the Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers era comes to a close, it not only marks the nearing of the end of one of the greatest QB rivalries, but it also gives the opportunity for a new blossoming rivalry. Patrick Mahomes has been around the league since 2017 and Joe Burrow has taken the main stage only in 2020. Despite Mahomes having more experience than Burrow, the duo has a healthy rivalry going on. This rivalry is based on pure talent as they continue to dominate the league with their impressive numbers.

With the form they are in, the duo has not only set the NFL on fire for the last few seasons, but it seems like they are here to stay.

The Bengals will play the Chiefs in the AFC Championship game. The Chiefs ended the regular season with the #1 seed, whereas the Bengals finished the season at the 3 seed. The rankings haven’t shaken the Bengals’ season at all as they managed to defeat the number 2, Bills in their divisional playoff game.

Patrick Mahomes vs Joe Burrow by the numbers

Sunday is set to be a spectacle as Mahomes and Burrow go head to head. With the AFC title and a spot at Super Bowl XLVII on the line, both of them will look to continue their top form. Both quarterbacks have racked up some crazy numbers throughout their careers. Joe Burrow has played a total of 42 games in his career and has 82 touchdowns to his name. In the process, he was picked 31 times. He has a pass completion percentage of 68.2 completing 1044 of his attempted 1530 passes, enabling him to cover almost 12,000 yards.

Meanwhile, the more experienced Patrick Mahomes has played 80 games in his career. With less than double of Burrow’s number of games played, Mahomes has more than double the touchdowns than the Bengals QB. He has 192 touchdowns, while he was picked only 49 times in his career.

Having played 38 more games, league defenders have intercepted him only 18 more times than Burrow. Mahomes has completed 1985 of his attempted 2993 passes. His pass completion percentage is slightly lower than Burrow’s but the difference in number of games played is key. Mahomes even leads with passing yards per game, with his numbers crossing the 300 mark while Burrow remains just shy at 280.3 yards per game. Patrick Mahomes has thrown for 24,241 yards in his career and that is a phenomenal number.

Numbers don’t do all the talking

Though most of the numbers favor Patrick Mahomes, Burrow won’t make much of them. He has had the last laugh on all occasions they went head to head. He is 3-0 against Mahomes and will look to make it 4-0 in the game that will count the most.

They have been highly competitive this season. Mahomes and Burrow have turned over the football the same number of times this year with 12 picks a piece. Mahomes leads him in touchdowns by 6 at 41. They are even only 1% apart in pass completion percentage for this season.

These numbers are just a trailer to the cinematic excellence Sunday is going to be. The AFC Championship is going to be a spectacle for neutrals as the two most in-form quarterbacks go head-to-head. Though a game can’t decide who is better, this game is going to be a contest for all the marbles.
