Four Years Before Signing a $75,500,000 Deal, Jarvis Landry Wiped off His Mom’s Massive Debt With His First Paycheck

The first thing most rookie NFL players do after signing their contract is spend the money on ridiculous items. Rookies are notorious for recklessly spending money left, right, and center. However, there are some who make good use of their money too. Like Jarvis Landry, whose first transaction with his rookie money was to pay off his mother’s debt.

Landry, who was drafted  #63 overall by the Miami Dolphins, spent 9 years in the NFL, later playing with the Browns and the Saints. He even signed a $75.5 million contract with the Browns, which would have surely enabled him to make some lofty purchases. However, none of them would have been as satisfactory as the first ever purchase he made: his mother’s debt.

Landry used his rookie salary to pay off his mother’s debt

As per ‘Dropkick’, the first thing that Jarvis Landry did when he signed with the Miami Dolphins, is pay off his mother’s debt. His mother was more than $30,000 in the red, which Landry plugged with relative ease. Even for someone only earning $420,000 as a base salary in their first year, this transaction would have been the least concerning.

However, that is not the only purchase Landry made with his rookie money. After paying off his mother’s debt, he proceeded to buy jewelry worth $90,000. That is a rather expensive purchase, but it makes sense for a rookie to splash around so much money. However, things are often not as shiny as they appear, which Landry found out the hard way very soon.

Unfortunately for Landry, the Jewelry he bought started looking suspicious soon after the purchase. When a diamond from his Rolex fell off, he decided to get the entire thing appraised. This led to a shocking revelation, that the products were fake, and that Landry had just blown $90,000 on fake jewelry. Safe to say, he would have been very careful about purchasing jewelry since then.

Jarvis Landry did well for himself in the NFL

Jarvis Landry played a total of 9 seasons in the NFL. He spent 4 years in Miami, then moved to Cleveland for the next 4. He then spent a season with the Saints, before becoming a free agent. In 9 seasons, he played in 13 games, starting in 116 of them. He has 7,870 receiving yards to his name, with another 783 rushing yards to add.

Though, his stats do not stop there. Landry has scored 43 touchdowns in total (regular season) and has only fumbled the ball 21 times. Surprisingly, he also has 146 passing yards, which is rather uncommon for wide receivers. All this makes the fact that he is still a free agent even more surprising. Having played with Odell Beckham Jr. in college, one would assume OBJ can vouch for his skills.

Either way, it seems Landry’s career in the NFL is on pause right now.  The fact that he has earned around $67 million in his entire career would mean he will not have any money issues for now. Unless he goes around buying fake jewelry again. Will Landry find a way to play in the NFL once again? Or is his time in the big league over?
