NFL players getting arrested are no longer a surprising piece of news. It seems every other week, someone gets into trouble with the authorities. Teams definitely do not want their players making headlines over such matters, and the Los Angeles Chargers are no different. However, after having held on for almost 6 years, they are back in the saddle, as their cornerback J.C. Jackson has been arrested in Massachusetts.

Details about Jackson’s arrest are still unknown, with the Fall County police refusing to comment on the issue. The Chargers released a statement soon after the news went viral, saying, “We are aware of media reports this afternoon pertaining to J.C. Jackson. We will continue to gather information on the matter and will refrain from further comment at this time.”

Jackson is a former New England Patriots player, who picked him after he went undrafted in the 2018 draft. In 62 games he managed 129 solo tackles and 25 interceptions for 220 yards. after 4 years with the Patriots, he signed a 5 year, $82.5 million contract with the Chargers. After 5 games for the Chargers, he suffered a season-ending patellar tendon injury while playing against the Seahawks.

He is only the second Chargers player arrested since 2000, the last one happening in 2017. Then offensive tackle King Dunlap violated a court-imposed protective order that got him arrested.

Los Angeles Chargers in cruise control despite J.C Jackson’s arrest

While Jackson’s arrest will be an unsettling piece of news for the Chargers, their sights will be on something far more important right now. With the AFC West division title snatched by the Chiefs, the Chargers’ only chances of making the playoffs are through a Wild Card spot. As expected, it is looking good for them so far.

Sunday’s win over the Tennessee Titans saw the Chargers grab the number 6 spot in the AFC, and in a prime spot to qualify for the playoffs. With a set of weaker teams on the schedule, the Chargers are in firm control. Chargers’ QB Justin Herbert, while pumped up about the win, acknowledged that the team has to do better than what they put up against the Titians.

“We would have loved to put up a bunch more points. We didn’t play well as an offense, and it starts with me,” says Herbert. “Can’t turn over the ball like that. I have so much respect for the defense for coming up with stops like that.”

The Chargers face the Indianapolis Colts (4-9) next Monday, and then they face Los Angeles Rams (4-10) and the Denver Broncos (4-10) in subsequent weeks. While everything looks good on paper for the Chargers, things can always go wrong in football. Will the Chargers hold on, and secure a Wild Card spot? Or will they severely underestimate their opponents and make a mess out of their opportunity?
