The San Francisco 49ers added WR Marqise Lee to their 90-man roster on Monday after the rookie minicamp that took place this weekend. Lee signed a 1-year contract to compete for a spot on the final team ahead of the 2021 season after catching passes from rookie QB Trey Lance.

Trey Lance’s first completion during a seven-on-seven drill with the 49ers went to a veteran wide receiver Marqise Lee who arrived in Santa Clara on a tryout. The 49ers waived wide receiver Austin Proehl on Monday to fit Lee on their 90-man roster.

Marqise Lee Career Stats and 40 time

Marqise Lee spent his impressive collegiate career as a WR at USC. During his three-year career with the Trojans, he had 248 receptions for 3,655 yards and 29 touchdowns. After an impressive combine performance where he ran 4.54s sec 40 time, Lee ended up being drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the 39th overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft.

Lee spent the first 6 years of his career with the Jaguars. After an average rookie season and a sub-par sophomore season, the USC alum had his breakout season in 2016. He finished his last season under head coach Gus Bradley with 63 receptions for 851 receiving yards and three touchdowns in 16 games and six starts. He also returned 18 kickoffs for 545-yards and a touchdown.

Marqise Lee backed that up with another solid season in 2017, finishing the season with over 700 yards in 14 games as the starting wideout for the Jaguars. His 4-year stint earned him a 4 year $34M second contract.

But he played in only six games after signing that big deal, having missed the 2018 season after suffering a torn ACL, MCL and PCL in his left knee during the preseason. After another injury-riddled season in 2019 which saw him start in only 1 game, he was cut by the team after the 2019 season.

The Patriots picked up Lee in 2020, but he chose to opt-out of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Marqise Lee will hope to join the depth chart for a receiving core with the likes of Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and Richie James. And the 49ers will hope that the former 2nd round pick will return to his efficient self as he did between 2016 and 2018.
